Camp New Life of New Life Ministries

Debi Ethredge, Camp Director, Braxton, MS

Tucked away in the piney hills of south central Mississippi is a camp that reaches out to kids living and growing up in the projects of Jackson, Mississippi. Camp New Life, part of New Life Ministries, exists to give these kids a safe place to come for learning and playing away from the dangers and temptations of inner city life.

The highlight for nearly every camper is the Horse Program. Camp New Life's five horses live on a 4.4-acre field. Grooming, feeding, riding and just being near the horses brings a thrill to these kids.

The Horse Program exists only through donations. The Director of the Horse Program is a volunteer, as are all who work with the Horse Program. Feed, wood shavings, tack, and horses have all been donated.

Manpower is extremely limited, and our barbed wire and electric fences require upkeep on a weekly basis. Having ElectroBraid would free up that much-valued time. The area our horses are in at night is enclosed with barbed wire. Frequent minor, and some major, cuts and scrapes result from that fence. With ElectroBraid we would have no worries of such injuries, which require doctoring, and which also attract annoying and harmful flies to the horses.

The existing electric fence has broken or failed several times. Our horses have run through the fence; our dogs have easily broken it, also. These mishaps would never have occurred with ElectroBraid. We could leave the horses in any area at any time, with peace of mind.

Being on limited pasture, rotation is essential to the health of our horses. This would be greatly facilitated by the ease with which ElectroBraid is installed and moved.

Schooling takes place in two acres of the field. The high visibility of ElectroBraid would bring a greater degree of mental and emotional calmness and focus to the horses, the inexperienced riders, and the handlers.

The safety of our campers is essential. It is always a concern for us that the campers might run into the barbed wire or the not-so-easy-to-see electric fencing in daytime or nighttime activities. The smoothness and high visibility of ElectroBraid would greatly diminish the possibility of human injury.

Camp New Life deserves to win. For twenty years we have served inner-city kids and their families, an oft neglected, yet worthy, group of people. Riding and caring for horses have become a large part of the mentoring/learning process. Camp New Life is cost-free to every camper, and works through a volunteer staff who sacrifices their time and their money to make the program a success. ElectroBraid will benefit our horses, our campers, and the aesthetics of our camp.
