Wildlife Exclusion with ElectroBraid

Airport Runway Protection

  • Deer are the No. 1 Wildlife Hazard to aircraft according to the FAA. There have been 520 deer strikes to US civil aircraft since 1982.  65 involved aircraft carrying over 100 passengers.   86% caused serious damage.  The potential exists for a major disaster.

  • Preventive action rests with Airport Management. FAA and Transport Canada have a policy of zero tolerance for deer on runways.  Potential legal liability is a huge concern for every airport manager.  A single deer strike has the potential to cause multiple human fatalities in addition to the cost of airfield shutdown, schedule delays and aircraft repairs.

  • ElectroBraid™ can exclude deer with over 99% effectiveness. Because ElectroBraid™ is frangible, it can be installed close to runways, precisely where effective deer exclusion is most critical. Perimeter wire fencing on steel posts has been, to date, the only fence option.  But perimeter fencing is expensive, requires constant maintenance and seldom excludes deer with any certainty. Deer enter the airport through open gates, drainage ditches or, simply, jump the chain link fence. Notwithstanding their existing perimeter fences, many airports still face a resident deer problem.

  • ElectroBraid™ is much superior to sharp shooting. A sharp shooting program acknowledges that deer are ever-present on the airport.  Even vigorous sharp shooting is no guarantee there will be no deer on runways.  And stray bullet can be hazardous.

  • An ElectroBraid™ runway fence can be 1/10th the cost of perimeter chain link. 1/2 as long and 1/5 the cost of chain link fence per foot.

  • ElectroBraid™ Fence is Frangible and Minor Deviations can be approved.  ElectroBraid™ can be placed in the Object Free Zone and/or Flight Clear Zone to address both safety and environmental concerns.  Neither the fence posts nor the Braid™ will likely damage aircraft.   Even a light vehicle moving slowly will cause a corner post to fold, buckle and collapse.  A line post can be flexed to the ground by hand.

  • Coyotes can be cost-effectively controlled. Coyotes won't dig under your perimeter fence if you add two strands of ElectroBraid™ on off-set insulators 6-inches and 12-inches off the ground. This may not, however, close off all coyote entry points, such as open gates or drainage ditches. To effectively exclude both deer and coyotes from the airfield, install a 4-foot high, 6-Braid™ ElectroBraid™ fence around the runways, and be sure to use extra line posts in low spots to keep the lowest strand of Braid™ 4 to 6-inches from the ground.
