Wildlife Exclusion with ElectroBraid

Highway Accident Reduction

  • In fall 2000, ElectroBraid™ was installed on 5 km of hazardous highway in N.B., Canada. It has been 98% effective in excluding moose for more than 5 years.

  • ElectroBraid™ fence installation and maintenance costs are about 1/3 the cost of conventional wildlife fencing.

  • An ElectroBraid™ Fence Minder™ signals a drop in fence voltage. If there is a fence problem, or vandalism, the Fence Minder™ instantly auto-dials a switchboard operator to dispatch a service vehicle.

  • Since 2000, there has been almost no fence repair. The only maintenance has been to manually cut weeds about once per a year.

  • There is no clear evidence that any animal has wandered onto the highway, to enter the ElectroBraid™ fenced corridor, from the open ends of the fenced section. Animals respect the ElectroBraid™ and stay well clear of it.

  • Access roads and driveways can be fenced with ElectroBraid to a distance of 50 to 100 feet back from the main highway. Animals that have been shocked are reluctant to enter an ElectroBraid™ fenced corridor. They seem to fear the prospect of being trapped between two lines of Braid™.

  • Alternatively, ElectroMAT™ can be laid across the road. It acts like an electric fence laid flat on the ground. Animals put one foot on the ElectroMAT and get shocked as they do with ElectroBraid (see video).

  • The ElectroBraid Wildlife Crosswalk acts like an urban pedestrian crosswalk. Thermal cameras detect wildlife beside the road and activate flashing lights to warn approaching drivers to slow down. An Elk Crosswal is operation on SR 260 near Payson, Ariziona (Click to AGSF News Report) Arizona Game & Fish report the Elk Crosswalk operates reliably with minimal false images (see report).
